Rx Disruptors: Navitus Transparent Takedown

The Industry Problem and the Navitus Solution

Traditional pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), who currently control 80% of the pharmacy benefit management marketplace, have received intense media and regulatory scrutiny for their business practices. Traditional PBMs often profit from hidden markups by retaining rebates, while plan sponsors pay high upfront costs. Navitus Vice President of Sales, Key Accounts, Jonathan Har-Even, comments on this in the latest episode of the Boss Moves in Benefits podcast, explaining that it’s like having an air traffic controller who is incentivized to create delays rather than efficiency.

Traditional PBM models aren’t working. That’s why, more than 20 years ago, Navitus was created to bypass the rebate-chasing game. The Navitus model is transparent and pass-through, providing payers:

  • A transparent view of where every dollar goes, giving clarity to drug costs that help inform decisions
  • Programs built to manage spend from the start, guiding clinical decisions that support member health while lowering costs
  • Decades of experience, solutions tailored to meet needs and the flexibility to adapt to what matters most

Jonathan is joined by Kristin Gray Hamilton, Managing Vice President of Key Accounts at Navitus, who details how big savings are promised with other models, but often lack sustainability. She discusses how our approach to reducing specialty drug costs is focused on trend management, “Driving costs down and keeping them down.” One way we do this is through Lumicera Specialty Pharmacy with its unique cost-plus model for specialty medications.

The Bottom Line: While traditional PBMs profit from the complexity of the system, we succeed when our clients save money, and their members get the right medications at the lowest cost.
