Soothing the Sting of Drug Costs by Choosing ‘Disruptor’ PBMs

November 6, 2023

Geisinger, whose Medicaid members jumped by 45% last year, is one of the payers trying to rein in prescription drug expenses partly by using smaller, transparent PBMs.

Geisinger Health Plan says it will move its prescription drug purchases next year to Navitus Health Solutions, as payers look for ways to trim prescription drug prices that are eating up tens of billions of dollars a year.

Geisinger likes to use “disruptor” pharmacy benefit managers that have a transparent drug-pricing system, according to Chief Medical Officer John Bulger, rather than one of the three giants who control four-fifths of the market and whose business models have been criticized for being rather opaque.
