NCPDP F6: A Guide to the Upcoming Pharmacy Benefits Transition

Picture yourself on a short lunch break. You have exactly 30 minutes between meetings and decide to stop at the pharmacy to pick up a prescription. You hope it’ll be quick. You check in at the counter, the pharmacist enters the claim, and within minutes your medication is ready. You’re back in your car with time to spare.

You probably never think about the technology that makes that smooth moment possible. You just expect the system to work, the information to be accurate and the process to be fast. You expect the pharmacy and your health plan to be in sync.

Behind the scenes, a major pharmacy technology update is coming that will help keep those everyday moments seamless. It’s called NCPDP F6.

The NCPDP F6 Standard

The NCPDP F6 standard is the newest version of the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) Telecommunication Standard. It’s the updated framework that determines how pharmacies, health plans and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) like Navitus exchange information electronically.

The transition to F6 is a federally mandated industry change, with organizations required to comply by April 14, 2028. As a result, pharmacies, health plans, PBMs and technology partners across the health care industry are already preparing for the move to the new standard.

Today, most of the industry operates on the D.0 standard. The transition from NCPDP D.0 to F6 represents a major update to the telecommunication standard that will modernize pharmacy data standards and improve the way prescription benefit information is exchanged throughout the health care system.

The NCPDP F6 standard governs electronic transactions that support everyday pharmacy operations, including:

  • Checking if you have active coverage
  • Processing your pharmacy claims
  • Coordinating benefits when you have more than one benefit plan
  • Requesting prior authorization
  • Supporting specialty medication workflows
  • Providing real-time cost estimates
  • Improving pharmacy claims routing and communication

Why You Should Care

You may never see F6 directly, but you’ll experience the benefits.

The F6 standard helps ensure that when you stop at the pharmacy during a busy day, the system behind the counter has the right information. It can help reduce delays caused by outdated data or unclear requirements. F6 also supports more precise benefit details, which means fewer surprises at checkout.

You should care because F6 is designed to improve your pharmacy experience. It strengthens the reliability of the systems that make pharmacy visits fast, accurate and predictable. It also supports better coordination for managing chronic conditions with complex medications. Behind the scenes, it helps pharmacies, health plans and PBMs work together more efficiently to deliver a seamless experience.

In short, F6 helps keep everyday pharmacy moments simple while creating a stronger foundation for the future of pharmacy benefits for members, health plans, employers and pharmacy partners alike.

What F6 Means for Clients, Health Plans and Pharmacy Partners

The F6 transition represents a significant change across the pharmacy industry, requiring updates to the technology, processes and data exchanges that support prescription benefits. Success will depend on strong collaboration across the health care ecosystem to ensure pharmacy services remain reliable and uninterrupted throughout the transition.

Although much of the work happens behind the scenes, Navitus has been actively preparing for the F6 transition for some time. We’re getting ready now so our clients, partners and members have the information, support and resources they need to navigate these industry changes with confidence.
